Construction companies need to know whether the people arriving on site have the training and certification information relevant to their work. That can become difficult when records are spread across spreadsheets, email attachments, paper copies and separate contractor files.
EquipSet provides a digital worker record where certification information can be kept alongside site access, induction and attendance records. For subcontractors, the same approach can be used to keep crew tickets organised before workers are sent to a project.
Safe Pass
SOLAS describes Safe Pass as a one-day health and safety awareness programme. The HSA explains that the Construction Regulations 2013 specify the categories of construction personnel to whom Safe Pass or an equivalent applies. Safe Pass registration cards are issued for four years before renewal is required.
EquipSet can store and organise Safe Pass information as part of a worker record. It does not issue Safe Pass cards, deliver the training or determine whether a particular person is legally required to hold one.
CSCS
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme covers specified safety-critical construction tasks. The HSA states that workers carrying out tasks listed in the Fifth Schedule of the Construction Regulations 2013 must complete the relevant CSCS training and hold a CSCS registration card. The listed tasks include occupations such as scaffolding, tower crane operation, slinging/signalling, certain plant operation and roadworks activities.
EquipSet can keep CSCS information against the relevant worker record so site and office teams have a clearer view of the documentation associated with their workforce.
Connect certification with site access
Certification records are more useful when they connect to the actual site workflow. EquipSet's QR-based site induction process can check relevant certification information before a worker is recorded as active on site, while the live attendance record shows who is currently signed in.
Keep the legal responsibility clear
Digital record-keeping supports compliance management, but it does not transfer legal responsibility. Contractors and employers remain responsible for ensuring that workers have the training, instruction, certification and supervision required for the work being carried out.
For official information, see SOLAS Safe Pass and the HSA CSCS guidance.
Irish CSCS is not the UK scheme
Ireland and the UK both have a scheme called CSCS, and they are frequently confused. In Ireland, CSCS is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme for the safety-critical tasks listed in the Construction Regulations 2013, administered through SOLAS. The UK operates a separate card scheme of the same name under different rules. This page — and EquipSet — deals with the Irish scheme; a worker's UK card documentation can still be stored as part of their record, but the two schemes are not interchangeable.
The expiry problem
Certification compliance usually fails quietly: a card that was valid when the worker was inducted expires mid-project, and nobody notices until an audit or a gate check. Keeping expiry dates in the worker record, visible to the office and flagged as they approach, turns that from a surprise into a renewal that gets booked in time.
Safe Pass and CSCS questions
How long is a Safe Pass card valid?
Safe Pass registration cards are issued for four years before renewal is required. Check SOLAS for the current arrangements.
Is CSCS in Ireland the same as CSCS in the UK?
No. The Irish Construction Skills Certification Scheme covers safety-critical tasks listed in the Construction Regulations 2013 and is administered through SOLAS. The UK runs a separate card scheme with the same name. EquipSet tracks the records either way, but the schemes are not interchangeable.
Who needs a Safe Pass card?
The Construction Regulations 2013 specify the categories of construction personnel to whom Safe Pass or an equivalent applies, and Irish sites routinely expect it at induction. Confirm what applies to specific roles against current SOLAS and HSA guidance.
Does EquipSet warn when a card is about to expire?
Yes. Certification records are kept with expiry dates against the worker, and approaching expiries are visible so renewals can be arranged before the card lapses.
