RAMS management for Irish construction sites.
A digital RAMS workflow can make it easier to store documents, control versions, record acknowledgement and keep the relevant information with the site and work activity.
What are RAMS?
Risk Assessment Method Statements, commonly called RAMS, bring risk assessment and method-statement information together for a planned work activity. The HSA explains that RAMS can form part of a contractor's safety-management system and should be developed before relevant work begins, with consultation and sign-off by the relevant people.
RAMS are not simply paperwork. The HSA's current guidance describes them as part of planning, briefing, managing and supervising work safely.
A practical RAMS workflow
1. Prepare. Identify the activity, hazards, controls, responsible people and relevant site information.
2. Review. Make sure the RAMS reflects the actual task, location, equipment and people involved.
3. Brief. Workers need to understand the relevant safe system of work before the activity begins.
4. Acknowledge. Keep a record of who has received and acknowledged the relevant RAMS.
5. Review and update. If the work changes or the original plan no longer reflects the task, the RAMS should be reviewed and updated as appropriate.
How EquipSet fits into RAMS management
EquipSet provides a digital place to store RAMS, control versions and record worker acknowledgement. It can connect RAMS records with the wider site, worker and compliance workflow rather than leaving them in a separate document folder.
EquipSet does not create the underlying risk assessment for you or replace the responsibility of competent people to plan and supervise work.
See the RAMS management software page for the EquipSet workflow, or read the HSA RAMS guidance for official Irish guidance.
What RAMS should cover
The content of a RAMS depends on the activity, but a useful document typically sets out the scope of the task, the hazards identified, the control measures, the sequence of work, the plant and equipment involved, the people carrying out the work and their competencies, and the emergency arrangements that apply.
A method statement that nobody on the crew has read is not controlling anything. That is why briefing and acknowledgement matter as much as the document itself.
Risk assessment vs method statement
A risk assessment identifies the hazards in an activity and the controls needed to manage them. A method statement describes how the work will actually be carried out, step by step, with those controls built in. RAMS combine the two so the crew gets one coherent picture of the task.
When RAMS should be reviewed
A RAMS reflects a plan, and plans change. Common review triggers include a change to the task, location or sequence of work; different plant or equipment being used; new people joining the activity; an incident or near miss; and site conditions that no longer match the original assumptions.
RAMS and site mobilisation
Main contractors in Ireland commonly ask for RAMS before a subcontractor starts on site. Version control matters here: the site needs to be working from the current document, and the contractor needs to be able to show who received and acknowledged it. A digital workflow keeps the current version, its history and the acknowledgement records in one place.
RAMS questions
What does RAMS stand for?
RAMS stands for Risk Assessment Method Statement — a document that combines the risk assessment for an activity with the method statement describing how the work will be carried out safely.
Are RAMS a legal requirement in Ireland?
Irish safety legislation requires employers to identify hazards, assess risks and provide safe systems of work. RAMS are a widely used format for documenting this for a specific activity, and the HSA publishes guidance on them. What is required for a particular job depends on the work — check the current HSA guidance.
Who prepares RAMS?
Normally the contractor carrying out the work, prepared by people competent in the activity and reviewed before work begins. EquipSet stores and manages the documents; it does not write the risk assessment for you.
How does digital RAMS acknowledgement work?
Workers confirm in the system that they have received and understood the relevant RAMS, creating a time-stamped record. When the document is revised, the current version and the acknowledgement history stay together.
